November is always a special month – the beginning of intensive holiday planning, putting the final touches on the current year’s programs and events, setting the direction for the upcoming year, and of course, honoring America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
Setting aside November 11, originally designated as Armistice Day, President Wilson outlined the importance of honoring those who served in his proclamation: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.
The Chamber is proud to “join hands in the common purpose” and honor those in our community who continue to serve, even after concluding their military service. This year, we launch our inaugural Salute to Veterans program. Presented by Grant Thornton, and hosted by George Washington's Mount Vernon, we will recognize businesses that demonstrate leadership in hiring and empowering veterans and transitioning service members, or are representative of the entrepreneurial success of a local veteran business owner. The second portion of the program will recognize local citizens as Distinguished Patriots.
For 2015, the Chamber has selected the following businesses for recognition:
Fluet Huber + Hoang, PLLC
NanoTech Computer Consulting, LLC
PHYLEO Private Investigation Services
Woods Peacock Engineering Consultants, Inc.
Being honored in the Distinguished Patriot Category are Bill McNamara and Warden Foley. Mr. McNamara was the publisher of Stars and Stripes during WWII and landed on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion. Closer to home, he was the commander of American Legion Post 24 when the Legion gifted Gadsby's Tavern to the City of Alexandria back in 1972. Mr. Foley was part of the Legion at this time and both were instrumental in preserving the historic significance of the building prior to the city taking possession.
As the Voice of Business in Alexandria, the Chamber is proud to honor our veteran citizens and celebrate their service with the entire community. We hope you will join us in honoring those who make Alexandria an ideal place to do business, live, and thrive. You may register on the event page at this link
